The Supernova

KINETIK's involvement with UK Synth manufacturer NOVATION began in early 1996. Colin Jordan visited their office and demonstrated KINETIK's Bass Improvizer, a custom designed piece of equipment which the band had developed and first used live at The Burning Issue concert in 1995.

NOVATION were impressed enough with KINETIK's ideas to want to incorporate many of the Bass Improvizer's features into their forthcoming SuperNova project, a polyphonic synthesizer which was about to begin development.

Since mid 1996, KINETIK has been heavily involved in the design and ongoing development of the SuperNova series with Colin Jordan actually writing about 50% of the instrument's operating system and KINETIK providing ideas for many of the instrument's unique features and programming many of the on-board sounds and sequences.

The earliest SuperNova mock-up was first unveiled at the Frankfurt Music Fair in Feb 1997 with Colin Jordan in attendance. Since then, the instrument has undergone many changes and 'refinements'. 1998's Frankfurt Music Fair featured the first working production models of the SuperNova which the public were be able to play and experience for themselves.

KINETIK's "Micro Tour" in April 1998 actually featured the first ever live use of the SuperNova worldwide, KINETIK having two of the first few SuperNova prototypes as part of their stage equipment. Shortly afterwards, the SuperNova was officially launched at met with much critical acclaim, later winning the "Best Synth" title in Future Music's 1998 reader's poll.

In 1999, the SuperNova range spawned the SuperNova's little brother - the Nova Laptop module which again was voted "Best Synth" in Future Music's 1999 reader's poll.

The 2nd generation of the SuperNova range was lanched the following year in 2000 - the SuperNova II Keyboard, the Nova II Keyboard and the SuperNova II Rack. The keyboards were equipped with many useful master keyboard features designed for live use, several of which were influenced heavilly by KINETIK's requirements for future live performances on stage.
