Doepfer

The following is a list of Doepfer equipment used and owned by KINETIK as from January 1999.

A-100 Modular synthesizer system

KINETIK’s Doepfer Modular synth system is currently housed in 2 x G6 base frames, taking up a total of 12U rack space. The modular system is mainly used to provide distinctive sounds for KINETIK’s recorded tracks or samples due to its analogue nature and complexity, but certain modules are also used during live performance for various purposes.

A-110 Standard VCO

A standard voltage controlled oscillator. Used to provide the basic waveforms for many analogue sounds as well as providing the ‘voiced’ sound source for the Modular Vocoder.

A-111 High End VCO

Used as above, but can create more accurate waveforms over a greater range.

A-117 Digital Noise / Random Clock / 808 Sound Source

Used to provide the basic waveforms for some of KINETIK’s percussion sounds. The Digital Noise section is also a good sound source for the Modular Vocoder.

A-118 Noise / Random

Used to provide the ‘unvoiced’ sound source for the Modular Vocoder. (Mainly blue noise - High frequency content).

A-119 External Input / Envelope Follower (x2)

Used mainly during live performance as Microphone preamps - one for live vocals and the other for the Modular Vocoder speech input.

A-120 Four Pole 24dB Low Pass Filter

Standard Moog - like filter for producing many analogue sounds.

A-121 12dB Multimode Filter

Mostly used to shape percussion sounds. The high pass filter is used to shape cymbal & hi-hat sounds and the band pass filter is used for most other percussion sounds.

A-125 Voltage Controlled Phase Shifter

Used to provide the phased ‘hi-hat’ sounds for Sounds Of Industry.

A-129/1 Vocoder Analysis
A-129/2 Vocoder Synthesis unit
A-129/3 Vocoder Slew Limiter / Attenuator / Offset Generator (x3)
A-129/4 Vocoder Slew Limiter Controller
A-129/5 Vocoder Voiced / Unvoiced Detector

The fully expanded Modular Vocoder System. Used to provide all Vocoded vocals during live performance. Used during the recording of Sounds Of Industry. Used during live performances of Kinetik Energy, Trans-Continental, I.S.D.N. & Electric Cafe.

A-131 Voltage Controlled Amplifier - Logarithmic

Used in the production of many analogue sounds.

A-138b Logarithmic Mixer

Mixes different sound sources (oscillator waveforms etc.) or can act as a mini audio sub-mixer during live performance if required.

A-140 ADSR Envelope Generator

Used in the production of many analogue sounds.

A-145 Low Frequency Oscillator

Used as a modulation source for analogue sounds. Used during live performance to sweep the phaser (A-125) during Sounds Of Industry.

A-148 Dual Sample & Hold

Used in conjunction with the random voltage source (A-118) to create many analogue sounds.

A-150 Dual Voltage Controlled Switch (x2)

Used to enable the analogue trigger sequencer (A-155) to provide 16 step sequences, processing the trigger and voltage outputs.

A-155 Analogue / Trigger Sequencer

To be used in future projects to provide short percussive trigger sequences which can be manipulated and improvised in real-time.

A-156 Dual Quantizer

Used to provide precise semitone intervals when processing the voltage outputs from the analogue trigger sequencer (A-155). Can also be used as an arpeggiator.

A-160 Clock / Trigger Divider

The 1/16 output is used to control the voltage controlled switch (A-150) enabling the analogue trigger sequencer (A-155) to provide 16 step sequences.

A-161 Clock / Trigger Sequencer

Can be used to provide extra trigger sequencing in future projects.

A-165 Dual Trigger Inverter / Modifier

Used to help synchronise the computer providing KINETIK’s computer graphics with all the sequencers which KINETIK use during live performance.

A-175 Dual Voltage Inverter

Typically used by Kinetik to invert a sine wave LFO output (A-145) to provide a wide stereo image (when combined with the original un-inverted waveform) when modulating VCAs (A-131) or phasers (A-125). Can also be used to invert envelope outputs (A-140) for interesting analogue modulation voltages.

A-180 Multiple Jack (x2)

A simple multi connector - always useful !

A-185 Bus Access

Allows any combination of A-100 VCOs and Envelopes to be controlled with an external sequencer (such as an MC202 for example) very easily.

A-190 MIDI - CV / Sync Interface

Used mainly to perfectly synchronise the analogue trigger sequencer (A-155) to an external MIDI clock. Can also be used to control the A100 Modular System directly from MIDI if required (for example to control the pitch of the Modular Vocoder).

MAQ 16/3 MIDI Analogue Sequencer

An immensely powerful sequencer which can be used to directly control any MIDI equipment or CV / Gate analogue equipment (such as the A-100 Modular System). Mainly to be used for future projects, but has been used to provide digital sequences for I.S.D.N. during live performance (actually controlling a Roland JP8000).
